Common Targa® Top Resolutions

  1. The reinforcement material under the vinyl is worn out. This results in the top's cover becoming loose, which allows for air to get under the vinyl, causing air bubble(s).
  2. The front beading on the top stands straight up due to shrinkage of the vinyl, or the vinyl is worn-out due to age. The wind then catches the lip and wind flows under the roof, causing air bubble(s).
  3. An incorrect gasket may have been installed, resulting in an improper seal.

  4. The new top windshield seal was not installed properly. When installed, the seal must be forced down into the groove, a task that is very difficult to perform. This is one area where experience really counts (This one of the most difficult operations to perform on any Porsche®. I would rather perform cam timing) .
  5. The rear seal was not installed properly. When installed, the seal must be forced down into the groove.
  6. Targa® top side seal (along glass) needs to be adjusted. This adjustment can be done on tops from 69-89 by loosening the four Phillips head screws (they are in tight) and pulling the seal outward. Sometimes the seal front and real rails must be priyed up, as they are glued in place. The back trim plate (two small screws) may need to be removed in order to accomplish this task. This happens many times to the tops that have been recently recovered where the side seal was improperly adjusted.
  7. The Targa® top material has shrunken in the front or rear due to age and/or climate. In this case, the top should be recovered before the reinforcement material is damaged due to moisture.
  8. The rear alignment pin needs to be adjusted. To do this, remove trim plate (two small screws), and loosen three allen bolts. Move the pin closer to the top and re-tighten allen bolts and trim plate screws.
